Many factors contribute to the health of fisheries – fishing gear regulation, appropriate
management of nearshore areas and active community participation in fisheries management.
Orissa
Several communities rely on Orissa’s fish stocks. Therefore minimizing bycatch and preventing
over-exploitation in marine fisheries present significant challenges. Mechanised vessels that
illegally operate in Orissa’s shallow, near shore areas have considerable impacts on the marine
habitat and therefore on food security for fisher communities.
